2009 Ash Wednesday Sermon

I am preparing to preach the Ash Wednesday service tomorrow at Resurrection. I have been working to pull it together and it will get there, but it is not quite there yet. Would you pray for me today?

If you are in the Kansas City area, I invite you to worship with us for Ash Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary on Resurrection’s Central Campus. I hope to see you tomorrow!

You can check out my sermon as I move toward completion at http://bit.ly/g3RsW If you find it interesting or helpful, I invite you to leave a comment on this post and subscribe to my blog via RSS to hear more.

  1. I did a quick read of your sermon notes. Sounds like your off to a nice start. I had a few miscellaneous thoughts as I read.

Maybe it would be cool to somehow link the concept of Lent as a time for repentance to the current economic situation and the real pain that people might be feeling. Those of us that have not been directly affected by job loss, foreclosure etc., have been given an opportunity to repent and help the needy in ways that are perhaps more meaningful than anything we have done in the past (link to Matthew passage). Those that are directly affected, have the opportunity to learn how to depend on God more than in the past (link to 2 Cor. having nothing yet possessing everything). Out of everything we experience, we trust in God to bring good (link to Joel: Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing).

Then, related to the concept of story, possibly tie it all together with some good story of folks during the Great Depression helping each other out despite their hardships (no ideas here, but it would be cool to have such a story – especially if it were a dust bowl story with a regional connection; dust/ash – seems to go together).

Sorry to ramble. I should probably stick with my day job.

    Good luck.

  2. i know it always feels weird for me when someone says ‘good luck’ when i have to preach…
but I hope all goes well and that you will be God’s voice to the people who come to worship.

    and..

    good luck
