The Power of No

It is far better to tell someone No than it is to tell them Yes when the answer should be No.

It does not matter how it feels, how excited the person is or how much you need to fill a particular role.

  1. In the IT department, we have a saying, “Our default answer is ‘yes.'” Often we find that “no” is the easy path. When we drill in, when we look deeper, when we seek to understand the customer’s problem, we often find a way to say “yes” that wasn’t obvious at first glance.

    I find this whole “yes/no” business is highly sensitive to context.

  2. Clif – You are absolutely right. I was thinking in this post primarily of volunteers, however there are clearly different circumstances. Your team does a great job of making yes the answer and being clear about the consequences and potential cost of saying yes, when it is necessary. Thanks for your comment!
